I am thinking about buying this knife, because my current leatherman is rusting... yeah... no idea how that happens.. don't ask.

anyway, when I am searching through sites, I ran across this knife

http://spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=241

is a knife from Spyderco
its model is
byrdRench ~ BY15PS

its blade length is 2.5"

on the web site, it says that it is a good one hand open knife
I understand that switch knife is legal to possess but illegal to carry in California.. so... is this knife a switch knife, and also, is this a good choice?

Why would you even carry a knife out in the steet? Just in case?

That's the thinking that gets people killed.

As for that particular knife. It looks like a great multitool. I'd buy it if I felt like I needed one.

that does look like a pretty useful tool. Too bad they are out of stock. And No, that is not a switchblade. A switchblade is spring assisted so that all you do is press a button and the blade swings open on it's own.

The reason why I am buying it is because it is a good multi tool ....
I use my current leatherman frequently when I am working on projects.
and I want it to be legal to carry in California "just in case" if I got stop by a cop or something..

Applicable laws.

The important bits:

Switchblades with < 2" blades are fine for carry.

Carry inside K-12 school with any blade > 2.5" or lockback knife that would otherwise be legal is illegal.

Carry inside colleges with any fixed blade knife with > 2.5" blade is illegal.

Carry inside public buildings with any > 4" knife blade is illegal.

Visible carry of any knife with >3" blade is illegal in LA.

Plastic/fiberglass knives are illegal.

All in all, not bad. Better than Texas even.

Yes, it's no problem except for when a cop who doesn't know the law decides that you are breaking it and you have to take him to court.

Don't forget that each city has its own laws.

The Leatherman knives come with a 25 year warranty. You send your broken one in and they send you a new one, no questions asked and they don't even care if you don't send a proof of purchase (like your receipt).

Mindless is actually right.

Bad idea. Criminals often work in packs, but people getting mugged only tend to notice their point man. Once you pull your knife and suddenly find yourself facing more opponents, you'll probably wish you weren't so hasty. Dinky folder vs half a dozen people... Not so great odds.

Given that ~ 90% of muggings stick to instrumental violence, I'd stick with the odds and not shank all muggers.

/Still carries a 2.95-4.3" locking folder depending on clothes.
