i just got a hakko 936-12, and have only used it sparingly so far. it is a pleasure to use, is temp controlled, and has a dizzying array of tips available. i upgraded from a stand-alone iron, a weller w60p, which was about $70 US. the hakkko cost me $85US.

highly recommended

I can recommend you the Aoyue 2900, I have one and I like it a lot. Can be found in UK here: Aoyue 2900 Soldering Station

Out of stock at the moment, but if you can wait..

More than enough power, temp controlled, tips with heating element, big tip catalog, slim iron, etc.

Hakko 936 is definitely what most people recommend. I really want one. But for you, as I've looked a little, its hard to find them in the UK, and overseas shipping is expensive.

The Hakko looks to be a nice station, here is something I found while browsing yesterday. Looks great for a DIY'r, I have not tried one but the concept is genius. Velleman Inc.

Cost is about $150 USD
