What is the best recording of Mozart's Requiem?

What's wrong with Karajan? Or are you referring to his "affiliations"?

I sort of take for granted that Karajan and German composers go well together, and I find his Requiem quite beautiful (he does Brahms' First marvellously as well).

Mozart's Requiem is just one of the ultimate ... whatever the version, it should not sound too bright, but rather be a bit thick with bass ... a real Death Mass, in other words.

Well folks, yesterday afternoon I heard the mozart requiem LIVE in Carnegie Hall with a 300 person chorus. Very enjoyable. Only problems were the cell phones going off, talking, and people showing off by being the first ones to clap at the wrong times.

As for Karajan, I think he was an evil force - lies, ambition, greed. And his own abilities as a conductor were overstated. I am not a fan. But I do like his version of the mozart great mass. Great singing.

I just picked up a digital copy from Linn Records (Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra) and am quite pleased with it.  It's even available in 24/96 if that's your thing.
