Rockbox is an open source firmware replacement for a growing number of digital audio players. It has been in development since 2001 and receives new features, tweaks and fixes every day to provide you with the best possible music listening experience. Rockbox aims to be considerably more functional and efficient than your device's stock firmware while remaining easy to use and customizable. It is a goal to not only offer a wide range of functionality, but where possible make sure that this functionality is presented in a consistent manner that is easy to learn and use. It is written by users, for users.

Another top priority of Rockbox is audio playback quality. Rockbox, for most models, includes a wider range of sound settings than that device's original firmware. A lot of work has been put into making Rockbox sound the best it can, and improvements are constantly being made. All models have access to a large number of plugins, including many games, applications, and graphical demos.

Read on here.....However, it is not stable 'yet' for Sansa Clip Zip.

I installed Rockbox on my Sansa Clip+ a week ago.
It is great firmware with more options than the Sansa firmware.

BTW, Rockbox firmware is installed side by side with the Sansa Clip+ firmware, so you can always toggle between the two. You can boot your Sansa Clip+ with Sansa firmware by pressing the left button while you power your Sansa Clip+ on.
I don't know if the above is supported with Clip Zip-Rockbox..but, I would think it should.

Another tip, you want to set the Sansa USB mode to MCP so that when you connect your Sansa-Rockbox to your computer, your computer will be able to recognize it.

One thing with Rockbox that I haven't figured it out is when I choose to play by Artist and choose all tracks, it plays songs from all albums in alphabetical order.
I want to play the songs by album and based on the original song order. Does anyone know how I can do this?

After flashing Rockbox the Zip would intermittently stop playing. I tracked the problem down to the inability to support the micro SD I was using. Back to the original firmware now and everything is OK again.

Shame really as I'm a Rockbox fan (got it on my iPod Classic).

Can you uninstall Rockbox easily from the clip+ if not satisfied?

Yes, it is easy, you just have to flash the original Firmware.
But be careful, you can easily turn into a rockbox-addict (like me) if you give it a try. Your expectations in what a firmware needs to be able to do can rise so high that you will not be satisfied anymore with any of the DAP's that do not support rockbox.
