Actually it is the Independent Electron Model. Very interesting stuff.

In laymans terms:

The independent electron model describes electrons in a solid by a one-particle Schrödinger operator with a periodic potential representing the influence of the periodic structure of the ions in the lattice.

Easy enough

In-ear-monitor is what I've heard it called. We've started to use this terminology because it became the common name here. However, Shure and Etymotic have started calling them "earphones" in an effort to have a stronger name for the devices. So I tend to think there will be some conflict about what's the right terminology in the long run. They're likely to be IEMs here for a long time, but if Shure and Ety insist on calling them earphones it will be hard to resist that terminology for the long run.
