There are more guests than members! Does the server track each guest and they are dropped as active if they don't visit within a certain time? How long?
Just curious

"Active" means : currently online.
Head-fi does have 20k or 30k members, I've lost track long ago. Quote:

I guess the server tracks each browser that's currently connected to the website, and members are identified by cookies.

It is also possibly done by IP address. IIRC, guests include people not registered, and serach engines crawling the site. On some forums, there is a list, ill try to find it on this one.

EDIT: Apparantly, you need admin privelages to see it on this site. In any case, i checked on another forum, and guests do indeed include search engines crawling.

I didn't expect active to mean on-line, but I think you're right.

When the main page had this:
Currently Active Users: 891 (396 members and 495 guests)
I added up the viewers for each forum and got 701. Not a perfect match, but close enough for the web. I suspect multiple pages could throw off the numbers a bit.

The posters count must be much lower, maybe 100 or so.
