And whereabouts are you located we may be able to suggest where you could try some instore (like turnkey in Tottenham Court Road, London).

Also, do you want 'open' which can disturb others around you, or 'closed' which isolate you a bit more and don't affect others nearby.

The sort of music you listen to can affect the ones people suggest and there are certain brands which some love/hate.

Hopefully we can help without overloading you with info or brand bashing.

Welcome to head-fi

Hi,

Well Im looking for closed supraaural headphones. Something that I can use with my hifi and just leave at home on my desk. I've heard that there are some good ones that people nearby cant hear them so they wont get disturbed. Im in Guildford so anywhere in London would be fine.

Also I listen to quite a range of music so something that will be a good all-rounder so long as the bass is pretty decent

Cheers

I would suggest the AKG K240 Studio. They are still the best budget headphone in my opinion.

EDIT: They are not closed though. Why are you looking for supraaural? I find them extremely irritating. Anyways, if you can get together a bit more cash the K271S is a good choice for a closed headphone.

what I think is 'normal'! Sorry just not sure the different types!

I dont mind going upto £150 if it would be worth it.

supraaural - rests on the ears

circumaural - encompases the ears

I think you are actually talking about circumaural... the stax smiley that you used is a circumaural headphone.

turnkey in London have quite a good selection you can listen to and they do a price match for most web sites as well.

Best to have a model in mind and a basic guide to the price - they'll check with the site before they undercut the price.

There are also semi-open ones like the HD600s (around £139 new in UK) but you may find a pair for sale here at head-fi even from the UK.

Brands such as AKG, Beyer, Grado and Sennheiser will bound to be mentioned. But If I recall correctly there may have been a thread on closed headphones which may help you decide on some to look into.

Take your index and middle fingers and lay them on your ears, that's supraural.
Cup your hands and put them over your ears, that's circumaural, the one we think you're thinking of.

The Beyer DT-250-80, Audio-Technica A900, Beyer DT-770-80, AKG K271 are all closed circumaural phones about in your price range.
