AHH!! I've been doing to much research. I really want a heaphone that will sound better then my stock ipod earbuds, and I'm willing to go to a maxium of $300 USD. I would really rather not buy used, because I don't know if I will like the sound signiture and I would like to buy from a place with a good return policy (if thats possible) I music is mostly made up of 80's and 90's rock, although its sort of growing out of rock music and getting mellower (jack johnson.) If it needs an amp, then I guess I could thin my wallet just a little bit more ($50). It will be used at home, so it doesn't matter wheather it's open or closed. Oh, and the source is a Ipod Nano. Whatever who guys tell me, is greatly appreciated.

would you need an amp? I have also heard that the MS-2's are very revealing, which would show flaws in my system, is this true?

I'm not a fan of the 325i, it's a great can but fairly bright. The MS2i isn't a bad choice. I'd lean more toward the SR-225. Get those and you'll save yourself $100.

If you're going portable, the 225 is probably the best. Be sure to pick up a Grado 1/4 to 1/8th inch adaptor though.

None of these NEED an amp. I wouldn't worry about the flaws. They will reveal bad recordings but that's the price you pay for good quality.

all these cans don't need an amp (they are 32ohm) but they all reveal alot of information; which sounds awsome on good music... but if you have lossy mp3s then it won't sound as good and may reveal flaws... but i have some 128 on my system and they still sound okay, but not great out of revealing cans.

I find that any headphones I've listened to(including 32ohm), sound much better amped. IMHO.
I would suggest possibly a Headroom Airhead or Total Airhead. Then choose the cans. YMMV

PS. 580's are a great deal, and the combo would be close to your budget. They aren't dedicated rock cans, but do everything well.

Very true. Grados just aren't all arounders from what I've heard until the RS1 and HP1000.

So I was thinking maybe going the cheaper route, and saying myself a couple bucks.

So far the contenders are:

Audio Technica ATH-A900
Grado SR-225
Sennheiser HD-595

I guess that all these don't really "need" an amp. I would probaly have to get the Grado's used, since the prices are crazy up in Canada. Which do you think would suit my needs best? Or maybe you could recommend others.

well I was reseaching some more, and came up with the Sennheiser HD580's. I know they need an amp, but many I could wait for the PINT's to come out. Do you think that a PINT would be able to drive a 300ohm can? And how do you think a 580 handles rock music?

yes, go for the 325i's. amazing sound, great looking, pretty comfy, etc. i got mine for only $265 (email price quote) at ttvj.com...plus it came with a wide leather headband.

From what I've heard reading reviews on the HD 580s, they are best at classical music. I have, however, heard of them being good for rock too; it depends on the listener.

You'll not go wrong with A900 OR HD580/HD595. You just have narrow your search here.

A900 is closed and dont leak the sound while HD580/HD595 will leak.

Unamped you'll get better results with A900 compare to HD595/580

A900's are better in clearity and soundseperation, but HD595 will take the lead due to it's open nature.

If you are a bass lover then A900 is for you. And if you like forward mids then go with HD580/HD595.

If you buy both then you'll prefer both as well for different music taste.
