You may be in luck : I will be in Singapore a week from tonight, Malaysia 3 days later and Thailand shortly before New Years. I'm going to take notes on prices etc and post a 'Trip Report', but my GF may have something to say about too many hours looking at headphones.....

USA always got amazing deal (nothing beats $99 TF10, i m pretty sure thats the deal of century ! i fking want one even though i already have one )

otherwise Grado and Ultrasone seems to be cheaper in Taiwan than other place from my reading.

otherwise try your luck in China...... but u might get out number by the fake one i think.

pls let me know how your headphone trip in asia goes ~ i will be travelling alot using AirAsia cheap fares

Oh, trust me, there wont be too much laughter as I stagger down Orchard Road in 34 degree heat carrying her shopping ..... I know its a tourist trap, but she is like most women : show them an 'endless' street filled with shops and bright lights and, well, you know the rest.

I hope to have the trip report up early in the New Year.

I wouldn't know what headphones to buy...but when in Malaysia or S'pore, always remember to haggle! Especially in the context of electronics!

Lowyat is probably where you want to start in Malaysia...

When in Singapore, drop in the "Adelphi" building. There are quite some varieties of headphones amongst other things Hi-fi there.

For headphones, visit Stereo Electronics at Plaza Singapura, Orchard Road beside the Dhoby Ghaut MRT station. If you're in the City Hall area, Jaben Network at Adelphi, beside the City Hall MRT station, is another headphone haven. Adelphi is full of high-end audio shops, you can spend a whole day there staring at stuff. Be sure to pop by Audio Basic at Adelphi for Acoustic Research tuning tweaks and Oyaide cables if you're there.

@ estreeter: You ever get around to writing that roadmap? =)

My friend is in a similar boat... Going to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore next month with his gf. Is there anything around the Adelphi that can keep women occupied while guys do their thing?

Also, how are Jaben's in-store prices compared with their online prices? He's not much of a haggler so want to give him an idea of what he can aim for. Might ask him to help me pick up an AMP3 or a T51 while he's there...

There's a tiny handbag shop and a few beauty parlours at Adelphi, but trust me your friend's girlfriend wouldn't stay too long. Better for her to spend a few hours exploring the Civic area around the place.

Jaben prices might be a little higher than others, so ask your friend to haggle a bit. They are still much cheaper than some shops at the nearby Funan shopping center that specialises in electronics though.

The deals are fantastic though. Many happy customers have reported getting things like UM1s thrown in for free with mid-range cans like the A900, fantastic value. Take your time to get to know the owner. I haven't been there myself but it's well known that he's a friendly man who's always ready to chat about all things audio.

Singapore is small enough to navigate, therefore the market's compact enough to allow for such stores- and I think judging by how crowded the country is, owning a headphone rig is a much better option than to blast your neighbors with speakers. That, and the popularity of mobile phone as well as gadgets AND the need for portable music in public transport contributed to the rising popularity of the inner ear types.

All in all, Singapore (and Hong Kong) is really a great place for headphones, both home and portable.
