What exactly does the gain switch on the amp do?

sorry to bump up an old thread but I was just doing some searching here.

I have a hd800s powered by audeze deckard and  gustard x20u dac.

here are my findings.

there is 3 gain settings on the audeze deckard amp, low-mid-high, I have done some tests to match around 70db on meter.

low gain- volume 2 o clock

mid gain- volume 11 o clock

high gain- volume 91/2 o clock.

I can clearly hear a substantial difference using the high-gain setting, even though low gain and mid gain produce the same sound level with higher volume control, the quality of the sound is night and day. I could not beleive I was missing so much by not using the high-gain setting.

so there must be more to this than just achieving a desired sound level.

MayflowerElectronics says there is no different with the quality. ...

Hello - You should have the gain button on the low setting (pushed all the way out). You should only need the press the button in if it doesn't get loud enough when maxed out.

It's not bad to use, but you can experience clipping (pushing too much power to the headphones) in the high gain mode. Both modes sound exactly the same. [/

So what will I use with Objective2 + GSX 1000 + DT990 600 ohms
