do people who design speakers/headphones have? I'm still unsure of my major, so I wonder if something like this would be of interest to me.

Some headphones I've heard...I'd be inclined to think the developers didn't hold any type of degree

Mechanical engineering, physics with heavy concentration on acoustics / vibration systems / wave propegation / oscillatory systems and the human auditory system.

A working background in sound reproduction... recording studio applications, PA system design. LOTS of hands on applications, university projects, industry sponsorship would be a plus.

Snoop around your local college radio station or TV production studio... try out for DJ / or production work behind the scenes. Participate in live concert events on campus.. help the sound engineers set up their gear, plug in cables and rack up the gear....
