What causes one driver to sound more feint than the other?

The right driver on my Shure E500 isn't working now... what are some possibilities?

Clog is the obvious possibility... what about water? I washed my piece and dried it with toilet paper and put them in - i guess this was a stupid idea.

Seems your driver's going, going, gone. This happened to my X3's. It went progressively softer until it just died.

having broken headphones causes one to sound more faint than the other

Ear wax makes sense. Check the end of the nozzle. There may be a little screen there that has too much wax on it or the nozzle is blocked. Hope it's that.

If not, then I'd say there's something wrong with those headphones. One side could be broken or dying out.
