what bitrate do you encode your music in?

Monkey's Audio (.APE) Mainly.

Startnig to play with MP4/AAC with Nero as a ripper.

MP3 format is dying out, next year when companies renew licenses for mp3, mp4/aac support should be included, so you will see a lot of devices supporting newer formats.

But when I used to rip with MP3 I always used EAC & LAME --alt preset extreme.

MP3s @ 256 kbps.
Audiograber 1.82, Lame 3.93.1

Used to do 192, but I stopped taking chances

128? That's basically unheard of here.

I'd bet if you tried a higher bitrate you'd be able to tell the difference easily.

Yeah, I had a friend that encoded some tracks recently at 128 with Joint Stereo (turned on by default). He thought I was being nitpicky when I told him to go up to at least 192 and make sure the Joint Stereo was off. He did followed my advise despite my annoying him, and he did notice a big difference in sound quality.

I rarely have a need to encode my music. But, when I do I always use EAC/Lame and encode at 320kbps for the highest quality. After all, storage space is cheaper now than it's ever been and why lose quality for the sake of a few $0.01

When I download, if there is something that I really want and it's 128 then OK I can live with it but more often than not I prefer to have 192+ and am usually delighted if I can get stuff at 320kbs.

256k / 44.1 .mp3. I end up having to live with 128k most of the time due to the popularity of the lower quality .mp3 bitrates on file-trading networks (I used to preview a lot of albums using kazaa, and ended up spending a lot more money on artists that I wouldnt've purchased otherwise).

Most of the music I have is 16-bit 44.1khz CD.

I seldom do any encoding. But when I do, it's with EAC and LAME 3.90.2 at --alt-preset extreme, with the minimum bitrate usually set at 160 (but sometimes 128) kbps.

Monkey's Audio

&

Lame VBR 160

Try encoding MP3's in discreet stereo rather than joint stereo. Makes a huge difference if you ever listen to MP3's through speakers. Of course, many would argue why bother with MP3's at home.

100% of my MP3's (currently at 1,572 COMPLETE alums) are ripped with EAC and encoded with nothing less than LAME 3.90.2 at --a-p s (many encoded with --a-p e or --a-p i).

For those of you who might like to know, I have no MP3's that are not in complete albums. ALL of my albums or complete....115 GB....mmmm....

If your interested in a filesharing network that has ONLY MP3's ripped with EAC/LAME at no less than --a-p s, check out www.ubershare.com ....I HIGHLY reccomend it!
