What became of your ORIGINAL HF-1?

I would think that John Grado understands that this is an open market. A lot of people are saying that they have a higher end Grado that they prefer, or just prefer a different sound.

at home, i mainly use the a900ltd and rs1 so while the hf1 are not my primary can they are used on a continual basis. i'm starting to consider using the rs1 in the office but the fact that they're wood might cause more undue notice of them.

Do as I do and lock 'em up at night (the L3k that is, the HF1s have been sitting in an open box on the floor for the past month

Maybe it's your work environment but I feel pretty safe in my giganto cube farm. Being an engineer in an area saturated with engineers there are so many people with so much expensive junk that I figure someone would really have to know what I have to have a desire to walk away with it. As it stands one of the rugged handhelds I develop on is more expensive than the L3k and I have had 4-8 sitting on my desk at any given time for the past few years.

Daily use (probably ~1-2 hours a day). I think these cans are ridiculously good. They are definately REFERENCE for me. Call them colored if you want, to me they sound AWESOME...and well RIGHT.

I just bought some KSC-75's today to replace my failure 35's. They KSC-75 is definately quite a bit brighter than my HF-1's with Flats. Who would of thought, a Koss being brighter than a Grado!

My question to those who sold their HF-1's, what motivated the sale?

i guess i could lock them up at night but it's just easier to put them on one of the hangers in my cube. i'm also in a gigantic cube farm and the stuff that i'm working on has more value than the hf1. i'm sure that whoever goes into my cube to take something would probably take a handheld first before they took a pair of plastic headphones that look it came out of the 60's. you're right though, the office environment is pretty safe.

This way instead of sitting in my closet the HF-1 went to another head-fier who would actually use and appreciate it.

Replace RS-1 with HF-1, and HF-1 with SR-80, and this was exactly why I just sold my SR-80's. The HF-1's do everything better.
I guess this shows where the money goes.
RS-1 $650
HF-1 $200
SR-80 $95
The more you pay, the better the sound...with Grado's at least (though I heard the SR-125 is an oddity, in that it sounds bad...then there is the old SR-325's everyone hates).

[completely unrelated Grado talk below]

My vote for the ugliest Grado goes to either the SR-40 or the silver SR-325. Nasty stuff. Surprisingly the old MS-2 (button-less) looks great! Who would have figured. Following up 3rd in the ugly contest is the SR-325i (Gold...come in Mr. Tacky). I think four would be the RS-2. Why put wood that close to plastic?

Now you ask, what are the coolest looking Grado's? Well I'll tell you the obvious:
MS-2i (with silver grille, I hate that one example with the black grille), followed by the MS-2 with Flats, equally cool looking are the HP-2/3 (not a fan of the phase switches on the 1), then bringing up the rear are the RS-1/MS-Pro. Well at least my HF-1's have the metal grille to make them stand out a little. They sound is to die for though. Oh and the PS-1 would probably fit in at the top...though I don't even take it into consideration considering it was never sold here.

I can understand John Grado being mad that he gave people a special deal and they turned around and profited from it. But in my opinion, to expect any different (from at least some of the buyers) is silly. He released a very limited supply of a great headphone. So you have the supply/demand effect, as well as the collectible effect. This causes the price to go up. If the price doesn't go up in response to more buyers than sellers, well then people you have socialism (while visiting Sweden, it was explained to me that everyone wants to live in Stockholm, and since the rents there are not allowed to reflect that, there is a two year waiting list to move there). I'll take capitalism myself. Again, that being said, I can totally understand John being upset about it.

I'll tell you this much, at a price point of $200, I'll never sell mine, even if I stop using them, just because I think it's so cool to own a headphone of which there are only 450 in existence. As of now, no plans to stop using

, please, no politics. Although let me say that, if John's position truly is that he's disappointed in people who sold them for a profit, maybe he simply has the optimistic point of view that people may once in a while choose to act in a way other than that which Adam Smith predicted, allowing themselves to be influenced more by non-economic than economic motivations. Theory ends.

...sorry for being OT, but I agree totally! That shows how a possible (but unfortunately improbable) HF-2 should be like: A wooden inner housing, a metal outer housing and possibly no knob at the silver grille

Ya know, does larry sell the leftover outer housings from peoples SR-325, MS-2, and MS-2i's? I should pick some up and throw them on my wood chambers. Then I would have a unique HF-1. THough I wonder if the added weight would not be to my liking? I have always loved how light my Grado's are.

...that's right, but I guess you always have to sacrifice something when choosing the ones with the optimized looks
biggrin.gif

But maybe back to what happened to peoples HF-1s... unfortunately I can't contribute anything to that...

Because of other issues the HF-1 will be my top of the line grado. I am really happy with the sound and position. They're in my regular lineup.

Mine still haven't get to me.........

It actually arrived on the 30/11 but I was overseas and there was no one at home to receive. Then it sat in the local post office for half a month before being bounced back. Now I am waiting for Todd to receive it so that he can resend it to me.
