Since starting this thread, I've owned the HD555, AD700, K701, and RX700. All sounded great, but I sold the Senn and AKG and kept the AT and the JVC.

Sennheiser HD25-1 MkII. All of them will sound better amp'd but especially the ES7. I didn't appreciate what all the ES7 fuss was about until I heard them amp'd. The HD25 sound NEARLY the same either way (in my opinion).

I enjoy my HD280's out of my ipod especially in the car riding with others. Can't exactly blast music in public with an open pair of cans (although I also can't really recommend wearing the HD280's in public

Pre-Pizza box RS1 without a doubt. You cannot do wrong with them, they'll turn even the grainiest source into a smooth delight. And yet, you never seem to lose any detail... just awesome. They're the only headphone I can think of (well, the SR60-RS1 really) that you just can't screw up with a source on. Some sound better than others, but I've never heard a source that they sound just terrible with. Very much unlike their cousin, the GS1000.

You heard correctly. Sometimes use my semi-vintag Grado RS-1 out of a Nano and 5.5g Imod ampless. SOund better though amped. But stll not shabby running without one

My JVC RX700 and Sony MDR-V6 sounds good directly through 1st gen Ipod Touch. Sounds even better when I use my Cowon D2.

the Audio Technica ATH-M50 runs well without an amp at 35 ohms. that was one of the reasons i chose them.

I know I'm gonna get flamed, but...

I like all my headphones unamped! But I do agree that they do sound better when fully amped. I think the K701 sounds mighty fine unamped.

I also could enjoy most of the headphones that I owned without amp. It isn't horrible as some people might think.
But I also agree that they sound much better with amp.

AD900 and RS-1 sounds fantastic without an amp (but AD900 scales up so much with the amp, maybe more so than others).
