Who are all these people claiming to own watches ranging from $1,500 to $15,000? What? You're either all wealthy, older, or lying.

Was this supposed to be a "What are you worth walking around in fantasy land" thread?

You are in a forum in which many members do spend hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of disposable income on headphones, cd players, and amplifiers.

The demographic set for members here is hardly representative of the general population.

Personally I think it's silly.

Panasonic 1993 CD player - $25
Cheapo headphones - $10
Gap Jeans bought on sale by my sister who works there - $5
Random shirt - $20
Shoes (like indestructable Merrill shoes bought on sale at Nordstrom Rack) - $40
Work cell phone that doubles as my watch - $0

Total: $100

Ok, if it's a work day, then it's a shirt ($40-100), wool slacks ($40-100), tie ($40), nice belt ($30) and a decent jacket or overcoat ($100), and good Cole Haan or Magli shoes ($100). But even all these are Neiman Marcus Last Call-type items... a good way to get that $1200 Armani jacket for $100.

In an age where I'm pretty much required to carry a cell phone at all times, I've abandoned wristwatches altogether. Once cell phones can double as decent audio players, I'll have one single electronic gadget to carry around. As a result, I don't quite understand the idea behind a $2000 wristwatch. Then again, I don't wear thick gold rings, diamond earrings or have anything pierced with 24-carat anything, so I'm definitely not in the expensive watch demographic.

No, I understand that. From the viewpoint of anyone unfamiliar with hi-fi, I myself spend an inordinate amount of money on audio and personal computing equipment (and I plan to continue doing so). What I was commenting on was the curious timepiece trend in the thread.

I mean, having a niche audiophile hobby is one thing. Having a motive to exaggerate the value (or existence) of one's material possessions on a thread designed to encourage competition in that regard is another thing altogether.

I too have a watch that qualifies as a luxury item by anyone's standards. I just find it hard to believe that some 25% of the people responding to this thread have watches retailing at over $1500 . . . especially when they're merely listed as "Rolex," "Omega," or some other nondescript brand, while the same person's audio gear is described as specifically as possible.

But then, I could be wrong.

Sony MZ-R700 MD - paid 250€
Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL - paid 60€
Motorola V66 - paid 250€

Grand Total: 560€

Not that they retail the same anymore

It's late and I don't want to list all the prices but when I'm at full load... with two cellphones and my rig (hornet+alo dock+ipod+hd595) I travel with around $ 2400 in electronics. Crazy.
