Sennheiser HE 90 a.k.a. Orpheus.
Discontinued, but Senn assembles a last batch of 18 pairs this year using spare parts.Would set you back about $5000 without a required amp for electrostats.

Hmmm, just curious to know how much higher can the bose triports Leatherheads by Louis Vuitton go??

Why in the world would LV go team up with bose?? What a shame....

Overpriced crap meets overpriced crap, seems like a match made in heaven. Also nobody has mentioned the ATH-L3000... or the limited edition green ones... or qualias...

The top dogs (no real order)-

Sennheiser he90 -$5000 - $7000 (out of production but sennheiser just released 18 new ones, so maybe they are coming back)

Sennheiser he60 - $ varies ( out of production)

Stax Omega II - $1500 - $4000 (has been in production since 1998, but rumors have it that it will soon be out of production as omega III will replace it)

Stax Omega I - $ varies (out of production and ultra rare, less then 1 a year shows up on the used market)

Grado ps-1 - $1400 ( in production, but less then 100 have been made so far according to the last serial number updated, no one knows how many will be made or when it will stop being made)

Grado HP-1000 - $ varies (out of production, limited edition run of 1000 )

Ultrasone Edition 7 - $2700 - $4250 ( finished production but still selling- limited edition run of 777 headphones, apparently though only a few have been sold)

Audio Technica ath-l3000 - $1800-2500 (out of production but there is still a handful left in the new market, limited edition run of 450 - ath reports around 10 being left)

Audio Technica ath-l3000g - $2500 ( out of production but still a handful left in the new market, ultra limited edition run of 50)

Sony MDR-R10 - $ varies (recently came out of production, retail was around 4k and the used value seems to be at around the same price, but heavily varies, Ive seen one go for 1600 and one for over 4k )

Sony Qualia 010- $ 2800 - 4000 (replaced the mdr-r10, one of the only headphones that doesn't seem to be a limited edition run in the high end market )

Since HE90 and R10 have already been mentioned....

Ultrasone Edition 7 ($3k)

FreeSystems's wireless Grado I think was pretty pricy, but that included transmitter/amp.

Best,

-Jason

Postscript: Guess Chef beat me to it, though recently I've found the market price to be (for phones still currently available new, tho the HE90 is a special case):

HE90: $5000 (non-EU)
Ultrasone Edition 7 (?? in Japan it was $3,300)
Qualia 010: $2400 (Japan)
ATH-L3000G: $2400 (Japan)
ATH-L3000: $1800 (Japan)
Stax Omega 2: $1400 (Japan)
PS-1: $1400 (US)

No time frame, just a rumor... but realize normally stax comes out with there new high line model every 5 years, it's going on 8 since the omega II. Also some people have talked to stax about it they have replyed by saying ther are working on the omega III.
