To my knowledge: Sennheiser Orpheus.

None can even come close in expense.

Saw it selling for a lazy 28,000 AUD a few days back. But hey, they bundle the amp with it, what a bargain.

By the way, Orpheuss (Orphei?) are priced around $14,000 if my memory serves me correctly.

So yes, it's up there.

EDIT: Found them for $28K on some online store just now. Either way, they're expensive.

That's with the HEV90, though. The Orpheus itself (and not the Orpheus system) isn't worth anywhere near that much.

The Sennheiser HE90 Orpheus, Sony MDR-R10 and more recently, Stax SR-Omega lead the pack for sheer cost of buying, generally in that order. All three are out of production though and have been for some time.

Of the headphones being made today the following seem to be the top priced options. (Prices are the RRPs I've found from a few sites and can probably be bettered.)

Stax SR-007 Omega 2: $2200
Stax SR-4070: $1850
TakeT H2: $1500
Ultrasone Edition 9: $1500
Precide Ergo AMT: $1200
Grado GS-1000: $995
JVC Victor DX1000: $799
Audio-Technica ATH-W5000: $739

IIRC on the last sale that Jan Meier organized for the HE90 with Sennheiser directly, the price was far less of the $7,500.00mark for the headphones alone (IIRC it was around the 4K mark) and it was not so long ago....$7,500 WOW a big jump!!!!

The system was about $13,000.00 originally, but it is a sytem, not a headphone alone...
