What are the Classic PCDP's Going For?

I actually like the technics quite a bit. Its probably my best pcdp sounding since the only others a have a the other broken ones from the lot, a newer sony one with quite awful sound, and a kenwood one, as well as a riovolt sp90 mp3/cd player. The kenwood is a dpc-x602 which sounds decent, probably my second best sounding. I wonder if the top where it reads "1 bit dual d/a converter" has anything to do with it

Then again, I probably can't tell which one is really producing the best sound since I'm only using ksc-35's.

Here is a brief comparison of the xp-55 against my sony d-303.

Gear combos tested :

Line out, Corda HA-2, AKG-501
Line out, Porta Corda II, Er4s
Headphone out, Er4p

Music : Beson/Breezin, Dylan/Slow train, Marely/Exodus, Stevie Wonder/Innervisions

Well, the d-303 is clearly in a class above the xp-55. The d-303 has a warmer sound, and more detail with well rounded highs and a sharp bass. The xp-55 also has a slight low level hiss when used at high volume with the headphone out, which is not the case on the d-303.

In terms of features, the xp-55 has anti-shock and the controls on the xp-55 are much easier to access and operate, which is important in portable situations.

The output of the d-303 is much more powerful than that of the xp-55 which can barely drive my akg-501.

While the sound quality does not match that of the d-303, which is supposed to have one of the best line out for a PCDP, it is still a very decent player with nice features.

This place is like Wall Street! I really wonder where all these PCDP buyers are coming from if they're not Head-Fi members/lurkers. Where else on the internet are people willing to shell out triple digits for vintage portable cd players?

Man, you really lucked out. Given eBay, these sorts of finds are getting rarer & rarer.

I got a D-777 and D-NE800 on eBay UK for $100 shipped from another Head-Fier. I just sold the D-NE800 for $30... I guess I got a pretty good deal?
