Sheriff's deputy and tow truck arrive. We field dress the elk, load it into the back of our totalled pick-up, and load the pick-up onto the wrecker. I hop in with the tow truck driver (a family friend, actually) The rest of my family rides back in the Sheriff deputy's SUV. 2/15/1998 1:45AM - tow truck hits a ~700lb Male Rocky Mountain Elk. Barely made a mark on the very large wrecker. Cracked the fiberglass hood a little-bit. We could not find the elk that night, but two or three days later I drove by the same spot and could smell the carrion, so I stopped to see if it was the same elk we had hit. Sure enough only about 15 yards off of the highway in some tall grass was the carcass. This is only 12 miles down the highway from where the first elk was hit. Crazy night. |
