I'd be interested in an answer for this as well. What sort of improvement can be expected from amping these?

Sorry to trash your $150 budget, but the Portaphile V2 (and latest V2^2) is great with these Beyer phones. The 770 in particular is renowned -- in addition to its prodigious bass -- for weird gaps in the middle of the soundstage and also some significant dips in the middle of the frequency spectrum.

The Portaphile V2 has the unique ability to fill these voids with body, energy and a much more satisfying soundstage and midrange, while maintaining the deep bass and adding more forward presentation and impact.

See Portaphile.com for price options.

Of course, keep your eyes peeled for a used PV2. Don't bother with the older Portaphiles ... V1, V2 beta or older for the Beyers.

Actually, the Channel Islands Audio VHP-1 also does nice things for the Beyers, but it's not a portable ... more of a small (neat, trim and nicely finished) desktop amp ... and it also costs more.
