From those I have heard with the D5000, you'd want something with balls and authority, to control the Denon's - temperemental, shall we say - bass.

Matching that with your preference for uncoloured sound at budget points toward the Headamp GS-1. Other options, perhaps easier to get hold of (that is, without a 3 year build time

) would be either the Graham Slee Solo Intro or the Lehmann Black Cube Linear.

EDIT: just did some checking and see the new pricing for the Lehmann and Graham Slee may put them out of budget....their prices seem to have skyrocketed in the past year with the deteriorating value of the greenback against the Euro and Pound

. If, however, you are looking at the used market you may well be able to find them within budget.

You might try the Musical Fidelity X-Canv8 - it sounds pretty good with the D5000s. And... it's at a fairly good price.

Solo does as well... but, a bit more expensive.

Let me suggest the CI VHP2/Vac1 combo as a good choice. I use the straight CI chain ( meaning CI Dac to CI Amp) with a Markl modded D5000 as my bedroom setup. Sounds great.

Perreaux SHX2 isn't a bad option, nice n warm sound with great bass grip, especially with D5000s. A-B'd the D5000s (in local hifi store) against k701s on the SXH2, bigger and more expansive soundstage. Not coloured at all. All the sounds of valve with solid state control of mosfets.

It could come up in your price range too.

Would what's the best amp for D5000 also be the best amp for MD5000 (the markl modded D5000)?

I have only had it (for review) for a few days, but based on my initial take, the Purity Audio KICAS Caliente is truly excellent with the D5000. It's also not too big, and $399. Really an excellent sounding amp with the D5000's.

Where does it rate with the DV 337 (just curious)?

Really too soon for me to answer that question - I have just started listening to it.

I was very much liking the 5000 and the Headroom Desktop and millet.

I ended up getting the millet in the end, going to grab a pair of 2000s myself.

that has less to do with comments of damping, as of comments of where certain tube amps clip. dont listen too loud, you will be ok with most.

added:
This is also assuming that the headphone NEEDS a good damping factor. Based on how good MANY to most headphones sound from a 120-ohm source, this assumption is questionable.

FWIW I've been trying my modded D5000 with a Ray Samuels SR-71 I've purchased second hand recently. I'm very surprised with the results. That small thing can drive the D5000 quite well with classical and rock. Maybe it's a bit short of power to get "very loud" sound, but at normal listening levels with the volume pot at half its range, sound is delicious. If anything a bit heavier on bass than the cans sound using the Rudistor RPX-100, but the rest of the spectrum, stage and all that, is better than I expected.

If the Predator's amp sound is more or less like the SR71's and it is equally powerful and current capable, I guess it should be a good portable to match the D5000.
