What’s the shortest playback time can you accept for a player?

Under current technology, a player’s sound quality is proportional to its power consumption. Many famous DAC chip on the market go with 5V power supply since desktop device has very large operating current. Meanwhile, the high quality headphone amplifier also requires high voltage and current supply.

Therefore, the sound quality is a contradiction to its playback time on the basis of limited dimension. For former FiiO music players, we set 10hrs as a standard since I personally think 8hrs of playing time is the basic requirement to any portable devices. Considering that not so many people would listen to the music as long as 8hrs per day, it seems that a little shorter playback time can be accepted as well.

Anyways, I leave it to you to discuss.

4hrs would suit me fine, my commute is an hour each way
the average commute in London is 75 mins.

Ie I charge my 901 about once every 3 days ,and my Studio about once a month

4 hr minimum for me, but would want a removable battery if so, then we could swap out batteries for extended playback. If it was a low playback time player with no swap able batteries it would not be good enough for me.

Poll has expired, so I can't vote, but I would say absolute minimum of 8 hours, but a flagship should really last at least 10 hours (DX100 used to really p1$$ me off that it lasted so little time)

James, if you want to increase DAP performance, and are worried about playtime, then please allow us to quickly swap the battery, like on DX50/90

You and I discussed this, months ago, in the X5 thread, so I understand you prefer integrated battery, for better density, but a swappable battery solves the problem for you and for us, and then you don't have to worry so much about playback duration. Using a USB powerpack to recharge the DAP is not as good as a swappable battery.

As James says.

Under current technology, a player's sound quality is proportional to its power consumption.

Know The ARM1?(It is an audio player of Acoustic Research.)
Play time is 4 hours.(It is very short.)
But, the sound quality is so great audio player.

That's why battery replacement expression is the ideal.
Playback time and the sound quality is resolved.

4 hours with user swappable dx90 style S3 battery implementation plus slim and fat battery covers to accommodate extended batteries if desired.

8+ is good enough, but if 8 is what folks get it would be nice to make the battery replaceable by the user. Anything under 8 should only be acceptable if the battery is swappable for sure.
