Just got my 501 and boy, some instruments sound like it's coming from so far away.

Absolutely detailed highs and mids, and that' running straight from the NJB3 head out too (of course, max volume).
Getting a maxed out PIMETA soon to take advantage of this baby.

I've just performed a little experiment and can understand why some people may consider the K-501 to be "bass shy"

I plugged the K-501 into an old Koss PCP (personal cassette player) I had kicking around and at the 4 o'clock position on the volume dial the K-501 sounded pretty bloody awful.......... weak bass with a strained delivery........ only one word to describe the sound.......... thin and flat.

I then plugged the K-501 into my systems amplifier head-out (audiolab 8000) a bit more "oomph" but still way off the mark.

I finally plugged K-501 into GSP SOLO with Marantz CD17KI as source........... The difference was, quite literally, night and day .......... absolute class delivering spadeloads of control to the drivers.

To sum up............ the K-501's need juice, don't even contemplate buying them if you don't have enough juice to drive them.

Pinkie.

Just got my 501's from Todd in today's mail, and after 5 mins of listening to them I already prefer them to the 271 Studio's I have also been auditioning. Plus the 501's grip my head better (I have a small head and the 271's are very hard to keep on). But I don't see why they are called "bass shy." I hear LOTS of bass, but as Pinkie notes above, I use a really good amp (LaRocco maxed out PPA Home Edition) and source (Maverick SACD player). I hear balanced bass, excellent mids, and good highs that aren't strident. And that's before ANY break-in! The 271's didn't begin to sound this good before a solid week of 24/7 playtime.

wrong forum , isn't it ?

I had a chance to get k401 in the past ( they're quite rare to be found )and kept the mfor a while after reading they were 95% of k501 .
Well i found k401 not hi-end headphones and gave them away for few bucks .
Now I'll hopefully get k501 by the end of the next week ....
