First post here. I use my HE-600 with a FiiO X5 player, computer, and iPod shuffle. I was wondering what you would consider the next step in sound quality with an IEM, in the $400-600 range.

Do you mean that you have the RE-600?
If you want a similar neutral sound, then the new Etymotics are worth a look, the ER4-SR and ER4-XR. The XR has a little bit of extra low frequency presence, but not too much. They are incredibly detailed, so if you're listening to ropey recordings or low bitrates, these might be a problem.

In your opinion what would be a step beyond the ER4?
