I liked the sound out of the W1000 better. The W5000 was umbereable to wear, any slight movement of the head and it would creak. It just would not go away even though I tried lubricating the various pivot points with silicone. At the end I could not enjoy them, plus at twice the price of the W1000 they were not worth it to me.

I normally prefer the W5K over the W1K.

But I also experienced moods and genres (slower electronica!!!), where they didn't differ that much. The better fit, the nicer look, the smoother sound and the price can also make the W1000 more attractive than the top tier W5000.

Actually, I tend to think that the W1000 would be sufficient for me personally if I ever got into AT-idits.
