I currently own the W1000 and have grown to love them. I was curious to hear from those that have heard both. What are the differences? I have heard that the sonic differences are subtle. Thanks in advance.

there are several more threads here about these two cans. Because I don't agree with the one mentioned above, here's my two cents.
I have W1000 for about 8 months now and indeed, they grew on me too.
A few weeks ago I had the oportunity to compare my W1000 to W5000. I listened to both in two sessions, each about half an hour. Here are my thoughts with W1000 as reference;
W5000 fit with very (too?) little grip in the head. As stated in several posts here, you may need to bend the wires. They are very comfortable though.
W5000 with the soft grip tend to isolate even less than W1000.
W5000 sound more like open cans.
Bass on W5000 goes a bit lower.
If W1000 have a hump in the lower mids, W5000 have that a bit more up the scale.
I like the sound sig of both. I wouldn't wanna sell my W1000 because I like the more intimate sound sig for small acoustic settings (folk, harpsicord, guitar). It would be nice to also own W5000 for larger, heavier music though...
If you don't have W5000 money to spare, just enjoy W1000. depending on your musical preferences, I think W5000 is just different, not better.

Thanks to both for that information. They previous post supports what I have read lately. Curiosity kills (wallets) in this hobby.

Sorry, haven't heard W1000 to comment, but love W5000 more than anything that I've ever strapped to my head.
That's the thing with Audio Technica cans, they are not necessarily better or worse, they are different. You might end up keeping both.

I had the W1000 which I sold to get the W5000. IMO the additional cost of the W5000 is not worth it, plus the W5000 I had creaked and made a racket. So much so I sold them. One day I will get another W1000 again I liked them that much.

You saying they did sound better, except that you pair had some creaking problem or you liked W1000 sound more?

Maybe one day I will get another W1000 since I have the Yamamoto HA-02 headphone amp which is voice for it. I wold like to hear it first with my Yamamoto first though.

The fit isn't a huge concern cause the bend trick seems to correct the headband. The W1000 would be just about perfect with a tad more weight to the notes and little more ( and I emphasize little) bass.

Maybe the op should try a pair of open AT's. For some odd reason I prefer the sound of my AD700 to my current W1000. Just something else to consider.

For the last few months the AD2000s have been getting most use, the W1000s are still used with the Yamamoto and the W5000s have been retired to their box for the last 3 months.
Guess I'd have to save the W1000.
The W5000s may be a little less amp dependent IME but the W1000, especially with the Yammy, have a rich, expansive sound that appeals and they're also the most comfortable of the 3 AT's IMO.

I've had owned the W100s, W1000 and W5000 and now own the AD2000. I feel that the mids for the W5000 is the most strongest with the mod done on them to increase the fit (make them tighter on your head). The mod also increases the bass on them as well. There are threads around that explain the mod and the sonic differences with and without them. The W1000s and even the W100s, don't have stronger mids, but they do have a more laid back presentation than the W5000s. I found the W5000s have a more forward presentation out of the four. The AD2000 is a fun open can and I enjoy the energy they produce. The AD2000 has more bass than the other 3 AT cans. I feel they compliment well with my HD650s.
