If you do give away your N505, make sure to pick up a Sharp DR7

it looks awesome! much better than my silver N505. the black N707 is one of the best colours Sony released in the US. i was so pissed when they released the MZ-R900 only in red in the US. but i bought it anyway, and the colour has really grown on me, i think it looks rather sexy, like a red ferrari!

I can definitely trace the lineage of the USA-market MZ-R7##/MZ-N7## series MD Recording Walkman units, as far as colour is concerned. The first in that modern mid-level series, the MZ-R70(PC) introduced in the spring of 2000, was released in the USA in silver and in blue. Then in 2001 came the MZ-R700(DPC), made in Malaysia instead of Japan, which came in blue and in (ugh!) green! In 2002, it's on to the current MZ-N707, which is offered in blue and in black. (The silver MZ-N707 is available in most other countries, but not in the USA.)

Oh, as I have stated before, the black MZ-N707 is for the USA market only.

Yeah, until recently I had been recording in REAL TIME optically from my Sony PCDPs. So only last night I decided to try NetMD. I therefore installed the OpenMG software (stupid Sony; their automatic setup program wouldn't allow me to install Simple Burner without also installing OpenMG Jukebox) - and then patched the programs. OpenMG Jukebox turned out to be buggy for me: Though my computer hasn't crashed on me, I've found that half of my MP3s came out on MD with no sound at all whatsoever!

What a piece of crap!! In fact, the OpenMG software had to be installed before I could use the alternative methods of NetMD transfers!!!

So, today I've decided to download the Sony Audio Devices plugin for RealONE player - and use RealONE to transfer my MP3 files onto NetMD. So far, that method works far better - but on one of my MP3s the conversion process got hung up at the 11% level. I therefore decided that the particular MP3 file in question was itself corrupt, so I deleted it from the RealONE playlist.

So, screw OpenMG Jukebox!

yeah anything is better than OpenMG. i have some audiobooks encoded in 32kbs mp3 and openmg won't even convert them. i also have some 320kbps mp3 that openmg turns into complete silence when it tries to convert them.

realone doesn't seem to have a problem with these files and it doesn't have the check-in/check-out limit either.

did sony drop openmg in this year's players? I see sonicstage listed which i've heard is supposed to be a lot better.

You can get them brand new on eBay for $150. I wonder if this model is likely to make friends with the repair shop technician.

And just how fast did the transfer process on mine went? Well, factoring in the time it took to convert MP3s into ATRAC3 format, I'd say that the overall transfer/conversion speed combined came out to about 6 times normal speed, in LP2 mode.

But then again, I have a relatively fast CPU, ample RAM - and I was using USB 2.0 instead of USB 1.1 for the NetMD connection.

Maybe so but here in the UK i've yet see anything other than a Silver model offered for sale.

Beggars can't be choosers. Besides it what the thing does and how it sounds that matters. To me the colour is pretty much irrelevant - unless it dayglow Pink then I might have to pass on the basis of it being sissy

Sound as Ever.

BTW, mine is silver.

Wow that's fast. Granted my computer is 4.5 years old and I have USB 1.1 but the best I've done is slightly faster than 2X transfers using Simple Burner.

Getting a new computer in a little over a month so I look forward to the faster transfer speed!

woo hoo, just got one too to replace my dyng r55. This netmd thing is pretty nifty...but right now im transferring some album files onto a blank in stereo mode. Gonna compare it with another recording of the same thing from a ct470 line out as the source. Got a pretty sweet deal too arond chinatown, $158 cash no tax no shipping, black one, hehe, tried to hassle the old lady to $150 but she wouldn't budge, ah well..

Okay, so I've exaggerated somewhat on my actual transfer speed. I didn't quite time this yet at the time. This morning I did - and using RealONE I actually have gotten a slightly better than 4X transfer rate (and that's at LP2 mode, including the time it took to convert the MP3s to ATRAC3/OMG format).

That's still twice as fast as what I'm getting. Can't wait to get the faster transfer speeds.

Sony, please give us true SP, NetMD transfers! That would be so nice and perhaps give other MD fans who only use SP a reason to buy NetMD.

Even your speed isn't too bad, considering that your PC is 4.5 years old - and is likely to be a 300-400MHz PII machine with 64 to 128MB of RAM and a relatively slow 4500 or 5400-rpm HD.

Soupy, is there a chinatown in Baltimore, or were you visiting NY or California ? If NY, do you remember which store you went into ? What about the warranty...did you get one ?

Mar 10, 2003 at 3:12 AM Post #30 of 40
I was in nyc today, I'm actually from NJ, back home for spring break. The store is called ABC trading Co. here's the addy:

31 Canal Street
New York, NY 10002

phone: 212-228-5080

If you walk down canal street past the major area of chinatown (mott street, elizabeth st, etc.) then past the bridge, keep goin straight for about 4 blocks you should end up in a area with lots of small wholesale electronics stores. I get awesome deals around there for TVs, dvd players, etc., but you gotta shop around and compare prices. The store I went to didn't look like an electronics shop, more like an electrical appliance store, but they had 3 n707s there, 2 left now..hehe. For warranty the owner said if anything's wrong you gotta deal with sony, not sure if they were a sony authorized dealer or not. This other store I got to next door (to the left) is but he only had the 410 (or was it 405?), 505, and N1.. offered the 510 for $155, wayy too much, N1 was out of my budget too, and hence I ended up around next door.
