Hello friends,

I come to you for advice again.
This time, I am looking for a Vinyl Setup to replace my Astell Kern SP1000 for home use.

I use a Stax l300ltd with a 353x energizer and get crazy good results from the SP1k. But I’d like to expand into record territory.

what Setup (turntable, cartridge + preamp/phono) would you recommend in a sub 1500-2000$ setup?

Do you think I would get something suitable?

So far I have looked at the

Rega p2 with Orthophone blue and a Rega Phono MM

or

MoFi Studio with MoFi tracker and MoFi preamp.

What are your thoughts?

Rega gear is often recommended as a starting point for good vinyl replay,
Pro-ject is a good starter too, released a lot of well priced turntables before the current popularity...
if it’s you’re first venture into vinyl I’d buy the turntable and cartridge together and have the dealer set it up for you ...

2 items for you to consider
My top choice in your Price range would be the Gold Note Valore 425 ($1299 or plus version $1699 to $1899) Very upgradable. A very nice tonearm, but you will need to buy a separate cartridge.

Look up the Avid Ingenium Plug and Play (around $1500) In your price range.....great looking and more importantly....great sounding but tonearm and cartridge included are a bit of a disappointment.

For a Phono Stage look at Simaudio 110LP v2($475) A very good phono stage for the cost. You could always go Schiit Mani for $160 which you can easily resell and upgrade the stage later if say you bought the Gold Note and something like a Nagaoka MP-200 ($503) or Ortofon Bronze ($440)

I’ve ordered a complete setup for listening to vinyl on Stax:

-Rega Planar 8 with apheta 3
-Rega Aria phonostage
-Stax L700MKII
-Stax SRM-353X

In a few weeks time I’ll be able to report how this works out (if anyone is interested)

You could look at restoring and upgrading a Lenco L75 (Bogen if you are in the US). It will need a new plinth, arm and cartridge, of course...

The phono stage is the easy bit. Pro-Ject Tube Box DS (with some nice NOS ECC83s).
