I was just cleaning my ears with solution and a big piece of wax came out. It seemed at first that I was able to hear much better, but then realized my ability to hear high and low (especially high) frequency sounds has decreased very much. I tested some sounds and it appears that my left ear hears a lot louder than the right, but can hear much less treble. I listened to some songs and the treble isn't nearly as high as it used to be (same with the bass). Does anyone know if this is fixable or if it is permanent, or know anything else that can help me? This is pretty urgent, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

as the resident med student head-fier, i'm guessing it's just some minor trauma to the tympanic membrane. i'd give it a few days to wait and see, your hearing will probably get back to normal. meanwhile, try to keep anything smaller than your elbow out of there.

edit: does it hurt? or is it just a hearing thing?

I am going to the doctor, but I wanted some opinions from some people here too.

Thanks Goose. Hopefully, that is it. My ear was actually hurting before, but not right now.

I'd trust the doctor more than random audiophiles on a headphone forum.

Go get it checked out.

i'm pretty sure you'll be fine. sounds like your eardrum was just oversensitized for a bit after getting that big thing of wax out of there. but then again, even though i'm not yet a doctor, my parents are, and doctors are notorious for being terrible patients. so in advising friends i'll usually err on the side of not going to the doc when something's wrong.

edit: i do have my degowin's diagnostic examination book here with me and i did look up what musiclover's going through. so i'm not completely pulling stuff out of my ass.

MusicLover,

I both hope and expect you will be fine, but I would certainly STOP using that, or any solution to clean your ears. Per my ear specialist, nothing, including ones own fingers should ever enter your ears.

I experienced something slightly similar several years ago (now that's alliteration). Simply guessing, it sounds like you may have impacted wax on your ear drum, which ENT doctor (ear, nose and throat) can clean out just fine. Of course, knowing today's insurance systems, you'll probably have to to to a GP first. I hope everything is ok.

I remember getting my ears syringed and my hearing improved significantly. Some people produce more wax then others, which sucks for me because when i go swimming sometimes the water pushes the wax against the ear drum making me almost deaf in one ear.

I know some of you are probably telling me to clean my ears but it doesnt work, unless i use one of those solutions. Its easier to goto the medi center and get a free ear clean, good ol' canadian health care system.

<-- not a doctor, but I agree with Nightfall - I think the solution has irritated your ear canal, and it'll go away in a couple days. That happened to me once, and I'm never using an over-the-counter solution again.

Thanks everyone for your great help and encouragement. That's what I love about this place. Even though I haven't met anyone in real life, everyone here is always so nice and helpful. Anyway, it seems that my ear is already starting to get slightly better, so I'll just wait a few days. Thanks again.
