vampire RCA splitters, better prices

anyone want my splitters?

last night i was listening to my headphones, which have inputs split at the source with the other rcas going into my receiver for speaker use.

my girlfriend was listening to mp3s on the computer and i noticed some noise between tracks. turns out that the signal was leaking back from the receiver into my stax headamp.

not only that, but i was playing last night and noticed when i disconnected the connection going from source to receiver all of a sudden the bass got MUCH tighter. we're not talking subtle here. it was terrible in comparison.

i guess my CDP couldn't handle the load? is that right? anyone back that up?

could i have damaged it? have i damaged it?

i'm going with a dedicated cdp for my headphones now and a dvd player for my headphone listening. screw it!

Sounds like it, using splitters puts the receiver & you Stax amp in parallel which drops the impedance meaning it'll suck more current out of your CDP outputs. If the CDP can't supply the current then the juju goes bad and the sound falls flat.

Yes, yes, you have, it's a goner, kaput, kablooie, it's dead Jim. I'll take it off you and give it a proper burial.

No seriously, it's fine, unless it sounds different now than it did before there's nothing wrong with it.

I plan to use my AKG SAC amp and Grace 901 on the same source (RME digi96/8 PAD analog output).

Would it be OK if I turned the volume down all the way on the amp not being used, or do I need to power off the Amp not being used.

That would suck, because the SAC amp does not turn off. The power switch is purely decorational. It only cuts the outputs. Not sure if it cuts the inputs too.

This sounds like an incredibly bad idea to me. Why not just use a switchbox? It can't be much worse than a splitter and would prevent any unwanted electrical connections.

Anyone make a nice DIY switchbox, or better yet where to buy excellent switches? (silver switches? sealed switches?) There are plenty of electronics stores nearby for me to get the cheap stuff. But I have to do overkill, of course.

I'd like a nice rotary selector. I suppose it would be OK to do point to point wiring? and then put it in a nice enclosure.

Or would it be better to have a bunch of toggle switches to allow the possibility to have the signal split?

Hmmmm. Looks like I'll have to use front panel express. It has to look good too.

edwood, for me the sound was VERY off as soon as it was plugged into the receiver. even when the receiver was not plugged into the power outlet.

bad news!

yuck!

Have you tried doing it the other way around? Plug the CDP into the receiver only and listen to it, then plug in your other amp. See if the effect is the same when listening out of the receiver.

i could try. why though? just for the heck of it, or are you trying to troubleshoot?

i do all my critical listening on the headphones and the sound was terrible when the signal was split.

Curiosity more than anything else, just wondering if both amps/receivers got equally messed up or if it's only the Stax amp that's getting crapped on when you use the splitters.

i just did a VERY quick test, and it seems that it messes up with the Stax amp.

why that is, you tell me. i think that i just notice it more on the stax amp. the extra load is on the cdp, not the amp, right?

i hope you enjoy these things two weeks from now, aerius!

toodles!
