After lurking around head-fi for a year or so, I decided to see if an old DAC from my home-stereo audiophile days would work well with my desktop headphone setup. It's a California Audio Sigma II DAC (tube output stage) that takes in SPDIF, so I got a cheap little USB->SPDIF converter off of Amazon to try it out.
I currently have a Shiit stack (Magni/Modi). I hooked up the little converter to my CalAudio DAC -> through the Magni amp, and Wow! I was super-impressed at the difference compared the Modi DAC. So much more presence, rich and full bass, smoother highs, what one might associate with tube vs. solid state (even with a SS amp).
Now I'm wondering if investing a little more in the USB->SPDIF conversion would be a worthy investment.
Does anyone have experience going down this route?
Peachtree Audio has a nice little box that runs $100.
Thanks!
