Valab NOS DAC - subjective listening and modifications

russell,

you can add 8 more chips but you have to change the I/V resistors to 180R,
deal with heat sinking/ cooling of the dac chips and also the heat from the power supply because of the extra current

Actually, from a power supply perspective, the "luxury" DAC's power supply sits between the original version and the DC-30W external power unit.

Original version power supply section used:
on board power transformer, ordinary caps, and off the self voltage voltage regulators.
Luxury version power supply section used:
R-Core transformer, AC input filters, ordinary caps, and off the self voltage regulators.
DC-30W power supply used:
R-Core transformer, AC input filter, better caps, and power transistors to deliver higher current-sink voltage output.

In brief, if you are looking to purchase a Valab/TerDak DAC, and have no soldering skills the luxury version is a good way to go. On the other hand, if you have some soldering skills, I think the older Valab/TerDak DAC and DC-30W is a better way to go specially if you decide to remove the on board power transformer and voltage regulators which free up lots of room for the large output film caps.

Well, I finally received the DC-30 PS and hooked it up yesterday. I immediately noticed that the bass is much more tight and focused then w/the stock PS. I assume it will improve w/burn-in as I have less then 24 hours on it.

Has anybody noticed a decrease in volume w/the DC-30? It seems that my pre needs to be at higher levels to get to the sound level that I usually listen to.

Thanks

I see. Still looks like a good compromise, too many things have gone wrong in the past when I tried to get things done myself

If you set volume levels by ear, you may be re-acting to background noise, so you turn up the volume to return to the original perceived level. Then the neighbours start banging on the wall. I speak from experience, I couldn't hear them ringing the doorbell!

Just turned on my valab 3 hours ago and I feel they are already getting better since the moment I turned them on. Even the hum is going down in volume

QA-550--SD Card WAV Digital Audio Player

Has anyone seen jitter test data on the cheap clocks like the one in this thing and the Teradac/Valab hardware?

Bill Allen and others (including myself) are using unquestionably very high quality reclockers from Empirical Audio with Valabs. I have a March 09 version that has only one of these cheap clocks behind the USB circuit that I don't use. I'm glad I have one of the last versions that doesn't put one of these clocks in the path of a signal I already know has a nearly (if not utterly) reference grade reclocking. I mentioned the newer second clock in the Valab to Steve Nugent when they were introduced and he commented that it's possible they introduce their own jitter.

I find it disheartening that we keep seeing these cheap clocks popping up in new hardware with advertised specs assuming greatness with no real test data and leaving no alternative to avoid them.
