I was last in Japan in Nov 2009 and just missed out on buying a Stax setup. I've since picked up a gently used Stax SRM-006t along with a pair of 404s. But I've still got a hole burning in my pocket for the 2050 system and/or the SRS-005. They are around 25-35% cheaper in Japan than in the US, so why not? But what other Japanese brands/models are worth the potential discounted price? I think the wife would freak a little if I threw down $800 for some Denon AH-D7000s, but perhaps some other highly regarded Japanese brands could be in the mix (other Denons, Audio Technica, etc).

The one thing I lack right now is a closed headphone.

Currently I've got the aforementioned 404s along with a pair of HD580s and some Etymotic ER6i. Amps include a the Stax, a Qinpu A-3 and Cambridge Audio 540A integrated. Listen to all types of music in a variety of formats (vinyl, CD, mp3).

Buy some JVC-DX1000's! They have a good price on them at Yodobashi Camera in Akihabara.

I would go Mini lp nuts there. I'd get some of the Disk Union mini lp box sets(like King Crimson etc) that cost a fortune here but not there. Beatles mono box!!! The Japanese are Stereo nuts so you should find all sorts of interesting stuff there. Have a great time! Oh........and pick up a Nissan GTR too!!!

Try audio technica W1000X. Very beautiful and comfy cans with more balanced sound than W1000 or W5000.

If you will spend money on IEM, go for New Victor HA-FX700. Hi-end IEM that have wooden driver diaphragm.

I've only bought a few CDs in Japan. I just don't understand CD prices there. They run about $20 for new releases. Hard to stomach those prices. Even used CDs are pricey.

Well, you don´t want to know what a new release costs in Finland. =D Well, most of the CD´s I buy are imports from Japan, they don´t cost more in the end and the music is great.

Well, to be fair it's not just CD prices. I buy DVD's and Blu Rays from Japan and the retail prices are typically pretty out there.

I was gonna be a wisecracker and say you should get a wooden keychain with your name in kana.

On a serious side, sounds like you have a lot to consider. Have fun and let us know what loot you get. I'll just have to live vicariously through you until I manage to get back there in a year or two.
