How does a good DAP like the hifiman 901s work as the dedicated source for the headphone setup in my house? Is it like the high end DAC and transport??

The DACs in good DAPs can be of very good quality. Whether or not they are better than the DACs in other devices really depends on which DAP and which other device you are talking about. Certainly, the DAC in something like the Fiio X3 has already reached that level of quality where even better DACs (DAP or other devices) are reaching that level of greatly diminishing returns. Above that, it really depends on what you hope to get out of it in additional quality.
