Are there any recommendations for a DAC (and amp) powered via USB? Ideally something small and portable.
 
I have a work supplied laptop and travel quite a lot, so carting around additional power supplied is a non starter. I did try a Dragonfly, but it lasted 2 days before it went back. I found its sound to be very shrill, shouty and quite offensive. For balance, I did try it on 2 different PCs and with 3 different sets of headphones. It was crap everywhere.
 
If it makes any difference, I listen mainly to rock and EDM.

Happy to go up to £100 ($150). I thought the Fiio were battery powered. Dont they need an additional charger?

You could try an iBasso D7.

FiiO E10 or Topping D1 MK2 are also good choices and USB powered.

Or if you want to spend more you can look into the Leckerton dac/amps, though I don't personally rate them highly.

I suggest check out the Topping D1 MK2, it's a nice piece of kit for about $100.00
