Hi all,

I'm having issues where any dac connected to my PC is noisy (beeping, popping and static) which gets worse when you move the mouse (sound correlates to this).

I have tested a friends ifi galvanic which removed the noise, I purchased an ifi defender to be cheap and try to fix the noise without success.

What else exists in between these two price points that youve had positive experiences with?

I have also checked all the usual things such as grounding of desktop to earth (0.4ohm) without success. The noise is gone if I use my laptop but this isnt a permanent fix.

Desktop is a amd ryzen 1700 running on an itx board (unsure if this would have something to do with it).

Thankyou

Well you know your computer is the problem and I have never had that problem with an external dac that it kept making noise it could possibly be the form factor of the itx or power supply don’t know. If you have a coaxial input on your dac a Schiit Eitr should work as it isolates the usb input. I have one but have not had the problems that you have so can’t say 100% but they do claim it completely isolates the usb input and if the galvanic cured it so should the Eitr and is close to half the price at $179. You asked for something in between and I think this is it as long as your dac has a coax input.

You can look into the iFi USB3.0 Micro.
I had noise in my system, but not to the degree that you're experiencing. It def helped my issues.
FWIW I used to have the Eitr, and preferred the iFi product.

If you think the issue is electrical noise from the PC being carried by the USB cable, a simple powered USB hub in between the PC and DAC would likely solve the problem. I would spend $20 there before resorting to more exotic solutions.

Is the mouse Bluetooth? I had a Bluetooth keyboard that caused similar interference with an old DAC (NuForce HDP), which was completely cured with a USB cable with a ferrite bead.

I agree with bfreedma; start with the free or cheap solutions before throwing money at it.

Thankyou,

I have tried my scanner USB cable that has 2 ferrites on it without success and also tried a 4 port powered USB hub without success.

Would to indicate USB signal rather than power?

Try using a corded mouse and keyboard to see if it's coming from the wireless signal. Or turn off the keyboard and mouse while playing music. Next would turn off wi-fi on the system and see if turning off on any other devices close by (cell phone, router) changes things.

This is a fixable problem - don't throw money at it until you exhaust all of the possibilities. I use a PC to play over USB and it's dead silent - no magic boxes or cables involved.

Sorry, mouse, keyboard etc are all cabled. I have tried moving them to different (front) ports and connected through the USB hub while the dac is connected direct to the PC.

There's no wireless devices in that section of the house.

Keen not to spend money :)
