USB Mods from Toslink?

I think it is much more complicated than just replacing a connector. A USB connection, in order to make an asynchronous connection, is going to need some kind of buffering stage to hold the data it requests, right? I'm not an expert, but since the signal is asynchronous (otherwise the jitter would probably be quite bad, probably much worse than any toslink or s/pdif connection), such a change is going to be a bit complicated, probably requiring the addition of some kind of control chip.

I appreciate the answer. Still, I thought I remembered Steve Nugent at Empirical Auido used to do such a mod. I think he is too busy anymore on his soundcard mods to do any other types....Perhaps it wouldn't work anyway.
