I'm wondering if anyone has tried to set up a USB DAC with their PS3? The system has an optical out that would be preferable if one's DAC accommodates it. But I just ordered a Pico, which would be extremely nice to use while watching movies and playing games.

I tried to connect my past iBasso D1 via USB connection to my xbox 360.
No luck.

But then I tried the optical.
It's working

If you get Linux running on it it should be possible but not with the standard PS3 OS unless Sony specifically adds support for USB audio devices (which I doubt the would).

This might be more trouble than it's worth, but is there a SPDIF or Toslink to USB adapter? There are many USB to SPDIF adapters, but non that seem to go the other way around. I can understand why. It's an unusual need.

It would be a rather complicated job if going from SPDIF to USB, kinda like making an adapter that converts USB to PCI or ISA.

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but i was wondering, would it be possible to hook the ps3 up thru USB to and Amp/DAC like the Fiio E7?

Apparently, yes.  As long as it doesn't need drivers, it should work.
