Are there USB/Firewire DACs that do not have a built in amplifier? I just want something to go from my Macbook Pro to my Tomahawk, without amping. I have looked around, but I don't know what to look for really. What are some good choices <$100-125?

Hmm, not sure if the Silverstone EB01 has an amp or not, havn't taken the time to research it, but it's worth checking out if you haven't already.

Do you want something that has a line-out but not a headamp? Won't a line-out plus a headamp (that you don't need to use) work? Are you looking for a portable unit?

theres the Silverstone EB01 USB DAC as pointed out earlier

theres also the Firestone Audio Fubar II USB DAC

but like Awk.Pine mentioned...u can still get those with amp built in and just completely ignore the amp.

Yea, I was just hopeing that a DAC without a amp would be cheaper.

I would prefer a portable, but if a desktop has a much better performance to price ratio.

For something more portable maybe somebody on the forum would be willing to build you an Alien DAC w/ USB, unless you could build it yourself.
