i'm asking for a friend and i'm completely new at this. if you have about 150 dollars for a device. do you get a usb dac or audio out soundcard? he perfer a dac because he doesn't have to open the pc. he'll be getting an amp later. thanks

Hmm, I would go for the sound card. I have sampled a good DAC and compared to my Chaintech, there is no noticeable difference. You could get a EMU-0404 and have money left over. That is what I would recommend; however, if he is looking for something simple, I would recommend what I have, the Chaintech AV710. Then, if he falls into some more cash he could purchase a DAC and run a cable to the DAC from the digital out on the Chaintech.
