I am trying to pick a DAC/AMP combination for the DT990. I use it for general purpose computer listening, music, games, movies. Portability is not particularly important. Optical in is a feature I desire so I can get my Soundblaster X-fi CMSS 3d stuff to work when I want it. 
 
I was looking at the Audioengine D1 but now I am not sure sure as I read it is more an amp for larger speakers and the headphone port is intended as a monitor.
 
Advice on a DAC/AMP setup with USB and Optical in capability? Price is under 200.

Alternatively maybe I could get a better amp and go straight out of my X-fi Xtreme gamer and into an amp and not get a DAC at all.

Go for the Amp before a DAC, honestly DACs aren't a huge improvement unless your computer is really noisy.
