I indeed to upgrade my source. I primarily listen on my M^3 (627/637) to SA5000 system. I currently source from an Audigy 2 from my laptop, but I finally have a desktop up and running and want to purchase a card. I don't want to spend much more than approximately $100 or so. Someone recommended the E-MU 0404. Is there anything else I should consider in the price range?

The EMU-0404 is a good start. Later down the road though, take advantage of it's optical and coaxial output and get yourself a nice DAC. However, if you plan on getting a DAC anyways, then save some cash now and just get a Chaintech AV-710, which has optical output.

hm. I know nothing about DACs. Is it an external component used in line before the amp?
