Okay so I'm in a bit of a frustrating situation. I've finaly decided to get a good pair of wireless cans for my iPhone. And up until now the fact that much of my iTunes library is not 256 kbps hasn't bothered me. It's mostly old CD's ripped in the 90's and 200x's But now is it bugging the CRAP out of me. Every time I hear one of those grating hissy "SSSSS"es on an especially bad song I die a little inside.

Suggestions?

There's no easy way upgrade 128 kbps files, because they are lossy files. You have to find better files.

if you still have the CDs then re-rip them

+ 1 on iTunes Match.

Sign up for iTunes Match, pay the $25
Have it scan your library
Add columns for "iCloud Download" and "iCloud Status"; sort by "iCloud Status"
Select all songs that are "Matched"
Delete them; do not check "Delete From iCloud", click "Send To Trash"
They will then show as just "Matched" and the iCloud Download status will show a Cloud with a down arrow
Select all those songs, right-click, Download.

They will be replaced with songs at 256kb AAC. Not perfect, but better than 128k.
