500+ Head-Fier
Don't get me wrong, I love my Senns but I feel like I have been missing out on some sounds because they only have a range of 18hz to 20khz. I have had my Senns for about two or three years and I'm thinking of breaking gently into the audiophile world with a pair good cans that are less than $100. Now, it should be said that I don't have any reference point except the headphones I have (they sound similar to the HD202s). I have read 1000s of posts on this forum and I'm just getting more confused.
The AKG 240S (55 ohm) seems like a good choice but I heard some people say they are crap. I can't help but notice that almost everyone that says that though usually are comparing them to $200+ headphones with $100+ amps. You get what you pay for, right?
The Sennheiser HD555 are also tempting BUT I don't like the idea of having the huge adapter just so I can listen to my Zune. Which brings me to my next problem, I listen to my Zune a lot and I carry around enough crap in my pockets (cellphone, wallet, keys etc.) so I don't want to have to carry around an amp just to drive the headphone to an acceptable level. I also listen to my computer, but not as much for music, more games and movies.
I tell you right now that don't want Koss because I would consider that a step backwards IMO, and I wear my headphones all day usually so Grado is out for discomfort reasons and the fact that I don't want an in-your-face-assault when I listen to my music. It should also be said I listen to every kind of music (except country) and need an easy going headphone that can represent all these BETTER than my current Senns.
From what I have heard about the K240S I think I would really like the sound, open, spacious and dynamic. I don't care much for treble being too high (hurts my ears) and I don't mind some extra bass as long you can hear other sounds too (I'm not talking about bleeding or anything like that, I'm talking about turning up the bass so much that you can't hear the vocals or other sounds, below that level is fine, and kind of fun).
I want a good headphone that I can grow into and use on a daily basis for music, movies, games or anything else that has a headphone jack. I can't go over $120 and I'm not getting an amp right now. So I need a head phone that sounds realistic, rich, dynamic and grand. I love the idea of being surrounded with music instead of just getting in piped into my ears, so in other words I want a more immersive experience, like I'm there. Like I said, I want something I can grow into but it needs to be superior to my $35 Senns (which I have a feeling that I don't even know what I'm missing with them) WITHOUT an amp. Maybe someday I will get an amp, but not now.
I would love to demo some but I don't know anyone within 200 miles that will let me do that or even CARRIES AKG/Sennheiser at all. That the place that does do the auditioning doesn't carry either of these particular models.
Bottom line: Would anything sound better than my current cans (because of my non-audiophile ears. lol.) or would I only get better sound with a high end amp with $600+ pair of headphones attached?
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
