My son broke my HD555's, and I figured it was time to upgrade. A friend sold me his two month old HD595's for $125.

What can I expect?

To me the difference was in clearness. The 595s are more clear as if they extend higher. The 555s sound more jazzy if you know what I mean. They hump more in the bass.
Overall I'd say the 595s are definitely one step above the 555s.

jeah, I sound is very much alike, they are more of a luxury version, with slightly better material and headband.

Actually materials are the same, except 595's artificial leather headband is even downgrade comparing to 555's soft velour.

I have a pair of the HD 595's and find them to be more musical, refined, natural sounding than the 555's. You've made a solid step up to better sound. If you want to continue the progression to better sound, then the 600 would take you to a higher level (or the 650--there is some debate whether the 600's or the 650's are the desirable model to own due to their different sonic signatures). You can get by unamping the 595's for portable use, not the 600 or 650. I really like the 595's for jazz and acoustic. My 9 year old has fallen in love with them and I now "slum" it with a pair of Grado 325i's (and a few other cans for variety).

Enjoy your 595's. When and if you feel the need to upgrade, the 600's beckon (or 650's). Good move to upgrade by having your kid trash your old phones.

They are more of an update than an Upgrade...its like going from Windows XP SP2 to SP3.

whereas buying HD600 is like going to Windows Vista SP1.

okay i hope i dont start a flame war on OSes now.
