Hi, I've been using the ATH-M50 for well over 3 years and have been quite pleased with the sound quality. I've been thinking of upgrading however to either an ATH-M50x because of the familiar sound and the convenience of a detachable cable, or an open-back pair like the Philips Fidelio X2 or Beyerdynamic DT990.

My current criteria are as follows:

Budget - $250 - $300
Source - PC (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2), Nexus 6P (probably infrequently)
Past Headphones - ATH-M50
Music - Jazz, Rock, Electronic, Hip Hop, Funk, Pop
Other uses - competitive gaming (FPS), video editing, light audio work

Thanks!

For me Denon AH-D600 was an upgrade from ATH-M50. I can image they would work good  in gaming, but I am not sure if you'd like them for music. They play with rather strong V

For open, I like Fidelio X2, DT990,  and HifiMAN HE400S--all or which are terrific and within your price parameters. For closed, I like SoundMAGIC HP150 or NAD HP50 or AKG K553 Pro, all of which are upgrades to your M50. Good luck!

Love the look! Will check it out. Thank you!

Hoping to try the ones you mentioned soon! Luckily most are available for me to try before buying. Thanks!
