Upgrade of AKG K240 MKII for Classical Music

My guess is that if you get an AKG Q/K70X you will need a desktop amp to properly drive them, whereas you can get very nice results with the AD900 directly from your computer. Depends on your budget... AD900X are around 180 USD, AKG K702 are around 250 dollars and a proper amp at least 300 dollars...

What about the size of the ear cups? AKG K240 MKII ear cups are a little small on my ears. Are the Q701's bigger?

yes, bigger and deeper too.

The K701/2 is a step up over the 55 ohm K240 model:

-Flatter more accurate, smoother freq response.  They (K240s/MKII) are marketed successfuly as a studio monitor but they are far from neutral or accurate comparatively.
-Bigger soundstage, reaching farther out
-Better resolution and instrument separation, especially with complex, large scale classical music.  they  are my go to cans for classical, every night almost.

The K240 is a very good can for its price, but its outclassed in the $$ range you are looking at.  That being said, I still prefer it for DVD movies, youtube, hulu etc.  The K240 and K701/2 make a nice complimentary set in my own collection... IMHO

Hi Saleri, I still have the AKG K-240: it sounds good (expecially for the price), but if you want to improve your listening you'd better take a Sennheiser HD-650 instead of HD-600.
It's a worth of price (by the way, consider it like an investment), expecially if you connect it to a DAC/ampl. like a Nuforce Icon HDP.
Try to listen to this set and you will enter in another world.
The AKG K-701 is too much analytic and doesn't reproduce the lowest frequencies like the HD-650.
Let me know your next purchase.

I listen mainly to classical music.  I prefered the K702 to both the  HD650 and HD700 when auditioned ( amp was a Sennheiser  HDVD800). And then later prefered the K501s to the K702 Annies.
So my vote would be for a used set of K501s.( the lightest and most comfortable as well)
