New Head-Fier
Hi everyone,
I'd like some recommendations and opinions about ways of upgrading my listening experience. Thanks in advance for those who take the time to read my post and think along.
I like my DT 880 edition 250 ohm. I have had them for 2 years (so yes, they are burnt in). I enjoy their definition and. dynamics. I listen to them at home mostly directly plugged into my 2021 Macbook Pro M1. Which sounds pretty good (the MB drives the high ohm cans fine and loud enough). I listen to them in my studio/office through my Audient ID14 interface, which to my ears sound a bit better than directly from the Macbook.
But .. I have the feeling that these cans (DT 880) do not reach their full potential with my current setups. It feels like the soundstage could be bigger, opened up, and the resolution and liveliness can be improved. Not sure how to describe it more accurately. Hence, I would like to upgrade my listening experience to the next level.
Here are my thoughts:
- The headphones are pretty good. But am I hearing the optimal performance already? Should I upgrade the cans?
- The DAC's in the Macbook and Audient are very good. Probably this is lowest in priority w.r.t. an upgrade.
- The amp's in the Macbook and Audient are good. But perhaps a dedicated, more powerful amp can make a difference.
What am I looking for?
- <700€ investment that will improve my listening experience
- Preferably something that I can power of my macbook's USB-C, or on board 12 volt system (I live on a boat)
- Preferably something that is portable (meaning, I can transport easily from the studio/office to home/boat).
- I use the headphones occasionally for mixing and mastering my own band and sometimes other projects
- I use the headphones mainly for listening for my enjoyment. My musical preference is very very broad, but as a bassist and drummer I am listening for definition, impact, dynamics. As a mix/recording engineer I listen to soundstage, resolution, detail and depth.
I've looked at:
- the xDuoo TA-26S Tube Amp: interesting, seems a good companion for the DT 880, but not so portable. Since I live on a sailboat, I have 12v permanently and 230 volt only when we are in the marina or run the inverter.
- the Fosi Audio SK02 Dac/Amp. More portable and usable when we do not have 230 volt directly to the boat.
- the Fosi Audio ZD3 DAC. Mostly to use for my home setup with speakers to replace the AV-755. It uses 12v and I could use it as DAC with a headphone amp.
- Other headphones, but the reviews for these DT 880 edition 250 are generally very positive .. so I am not sure about this. I like beyerdynamic, and for speakers I love my Focal's.
Based on what I (over-)shared, do you have any recommendations?
Thanks in advance!
