Great to have Head Fi back up again. I missed you guys and gals!!

Anyway, I currently have the 595's and have upgradeitis. From searching thru the threads I think I would prefer the 600's to the 650's.

I would appreciate any opinions on what to expect going from the 595's to the 600's. Is the upgrade significant?

Thanks in advance for any and all opinions.

Roger

I went from HD555 to HD600 and yes, it was a significant improvement. I probably lack the audiophile lingo to describe the improvement in any understandable manner, but it was well worth it. The HD600 sound best with a dedicated headphone amplifier though, I don't know how they'll sound without one.

I forgot to mention - my current set up is:

Sony sacd -ce595 > Go-vibe 5 > Senns 595 & Grado sr80

However, for Christmas I will be getting a Little Dot MKIII tube amp.

Thanks

I had & loved the HD595, and I have only kept the HD650.

I don't think it's much of an upgrade to go from the HD595 to the HD600. Actually, I doubt it.

Hi!
If you lack the lingo, check this thread, it could help!

little dot works great with the hd595. why not get the hd580? they have the same drivers as the hd600 and cost around the same as your hd595

Senn's love tube's. So the LD wiil be an O.K. match. Hunt around. The 600's are discounted a lot of retail location's. As time passes. You will have another upgrade path to consider. Swapping those stock 600 cables. They are under achievers.

It will be a great upgrade. I loved the 595's, but they just don't provide the good warm sound that I enjoy from the 580's. They also don't provide the great upfront sound of the ms1's. They are just good at everything, but not great at anything.

source/amp plz? There are substantial differences between HD595 and HD600.

To OP's post: Yes it is a nice upgrade, but I would like to point out that you would need to subsequently later on improve your amplifier. Just something with more juice, and possibly tubes. HD600 offers alot of space to work with, and it is not going to show what it is up to unless you are willing to improve the feed. GoVibe will only be good as a temporary solution (your source is great though).

Edit: did not notice the LDIII. That would work very nicely (but if you get further upgraditis, you can hold onto the can and improve everything else).

You have not tried balanced HD580/600 have you? xD
They can be quite quite forward.

Of course if I have much preferred the HD650 to the HD595 I have an appropriate amp & source. Regarding the differences, you're correct: but different doesn't mean better.

My first full size headphones were the hd 595.They're great for movies and games, but the hd 600 trounce them for music...after I got them(and sold the 595) the word upgraditis doesn't exist for me,at least if we speak about headphones only.I repeat myself all the time,I know, but I'll add that the hd 600 sound much better for me than the hd 650,and the hd 580 are the next best in the Sennheiser line(or maybe the best if you like a brighter sound)

He's talking about the HD595s, which I agree with completely. Their mids and highs were kind of wonky to me too, can't really explain it.

Yes!

That is the upgrade path I took, though my source and amp differ from yours. I definitely found an improvement going from the HD595 to HD600. Benefits in my opinion included a greater soundstage so the music sounds from a few rows back if at a live venue versus on stage. Equally detailed if not more, and I personally find the HD600's timbre for instruments more full and textured with a good amount of airiness. The soundstage on the HD595 is unique, and can sound congested at times. At that time I used the Headroom Microstack. I'd say the HD600 overall sounds more robust. Of course, shortly after I bought the HD600 I upgraded the cable to the HD650 and then the Cardas. Enough of an improvement to confidently say I found very noticeable and worthwhile benefits going from 595 to 600 for my ears.

And I want to echo that tubes are really nice with the HD600. Even better as you upgrade source and amp so they are very capable headphones, which explains why they are still so highly recommended after so many years.

Best luck and let us know what you go with and your impressions. Sorry about the wallet and yes it's great to be back on Head-fi.

Yes - Personally, I think the 600 and 580 are in a different league than the 595. I have tried very hard to like the 595, but to me they just sound kind of muddy and unrefined when compared to the 580/600. Good luck with your decision!
